Jean Schmidt (born Jeannette Marie Schmidt, November 29, 1951) is an American politician who represented southwestern Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2005 until 2013. A member of the Republican Party, she was elected in a 2005 special election and went on to win multiple full terms. During her time in Congress she represented Ohio's 2nd congressional district, a district that includes suburbs and exurban areas east of Cincinnati.

Early and state political career

Before serving in the U.S. House, Schmidt was active in Ohio state government. She served in both chambers of the Ohio legislature, where she built a reputation as a conservative lawmaker focused on fiscal issues and local constituent concerns. Her state experience provided the platform for her bid to succeed her predecessor in Washington.

U.S. House tenure

Schmidt won a special election in 2005 to fill the seat vacated by Rob Portman and subsequently secured reelection in the regular cycles that followed. That primary loss brought her congressional service to an end in January 2013.
