Overview
Jean Schmidt (born Jeannette Marie Schmidt, November 29, 1951) is an American politician who represented southwestern Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2005 until 2013. A member of the Republican Party, she was elected in a 2005 special election and went on to win multiple full terms. During her time in Congress she represented Ohio's 2nd congressional district, a district that includes suburbs and exurban areas east of Cincinnati.
Early and state political career
Before serving in the U.S. House, Schmidt was active in Ohio state government. She served in both chambers of the Ohio legislature, where she built a reputation as a conservative lawmaker focused on fiscal issues and local constituent concerns. Her state experience provided the platform for her bid to succeed her predecessor in Washington.
U.S. House tenure
Schmidt won a special election in 2005 to fill the seat vacated by Rob Portman and subsequently secured reelection in the regular cycles that followed. As a member of Congress she emphasized limited government, strong national defense, and support for veterans and local businesses. She was known for outspoken advocacy on issues important to her constituents and for aligning with the conservative wing of her party.
Elections and defeat
Across the 2005–2012 period Schmidt twice won reelection in full terms after the initial special race, serving nearly eight years in the House. In the 2012 Republican primary she was challenged and defeated by Brad Wenstrup, who went on to win the general election and succeed her. That primary loss brought her congressional service to an end in January 2013.
Positions, reputation and legacy
Schmidt's record reflects a broadly conservative approach: emphasis on smaller government, fiscal restraint, and national security priorities. Constituents credit her with active district outreach and attention to local military and veterans' issues. She remains a part of Ohio's recent political history as an example of a state-level politician who rose to national office via a special election and whose congressional career ended after a high-profile intra-party challenge.
