Overview

Het Hogeland is a municipality in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. It was established on 1 January 2019 through a merger of four smaller municipalities. The new municipality brings together a mix of coastal and inland communities, with a population of roughly 49,479 people reported in 2019.

Constituent parts

The municipality combines a number of towns and villages. The former municipalities that joined to form Het Hogeland are:

  • Bedum
  • De Marne
  • Eemsmond
  • Winsum

Geography and landscape

Het Hogeland lies in the northern part of the province and includes low-lying agricultural plains, characteristic terp (artificial dwelling mound) villages, raised roads and dikes along its coastal margin. Part of its shoreline adjoins the Wadden Sea area, an important tidal ecosystem and bird habitat. The coastal zone and reclaimed polders shape both land use and local settlement patterns.

Economy and land use

The local economy mixes agriculture, small-scale industry, maritime activities and energy-related operations. One of the municipality’s most notable facilities is the Eemshaven port and industrial area, which functions as a regional energy and logistics hub. Tourism also contributes through birdwatching, cycling routes and visits to historic villages.

History and administration

The creation of Het Hogeland was part of a broader trend in the Netherlands toward municipal consolidation, aimed at improving administrative capacity and services for dispersed rural populations. The new municipal government coordinates planning, infrastructure and local services across the former municipal boundaries while retaining strong village identities.

Notable facts

The name "Het Hogeland" means "the high land" in Dutch, reflecting slightly elevated areas compared with surrounding marshes despite the generally low elevation of the region. The area is known for its medieval churches, traditional farmsteads and accessible coastal nature, making it a place of both cultural heritage and contemporary economic activity.
