Gilbert Jay Arenas Jr. (born January 6, 1982) is a Cuban-American former professional basketball player. A ball-handler known for his scoring ability, Arenas played in the National Basketball Association and later had a stint in China; he most recently suited up for the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association.
Early life and college
Arenas grew up playing basketball before attending the University of Arizona, where he competed at the collegiate level and prepared for a professional career.
NBA career
He began his NBA career with the Golden State Warriors (2001–2002) and is best known for his time with the Washington Wizards (2003–2010). During his peak years with Washington he earned multiple All-Star selections and became one of the team's primary scorers. Over his career he was often referred to by the nickname "Agent Zero".
Legal incident and aftermath
In January 2010 Arenas was involved in a high-profile incident in which he brought firearms into the Wizards' locker room and was accused of brandishing a weapon at teammate Javaris Crittenton. The episode resulted in legal consequences and disciplinary action from the league, and it significantly affected the remainder of his NBA tenure.
Later career
After leaving the NBA, Arenas continued his playing career overseas, including time with the Shanghai Sharks. His on-court accomplishments and the 2010 incident remain prominent aspects of his public profile.
