Fullerton is a city in northern Orange County, California, in the United States. The 2010 U.S. census recorded 135,161 people living in Fullerton; since then the city has continued to develop as a suburban, educational and cultural center within the region. Fullerton combines a historic downtown core with university campuses, neighborhood residential areas and light commercial districts.
Origins and development. The community grew during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as agriculture (notably citrus) and later oil and rail transportation shaped northern Orange County. The city was named after a local landowner and railroad figure and incorporated as a municipality in the late 1800s. Post‑World War II suburban expansion and the growth of higher education institutions transformed Fullerton into a populous urbanized city.
Education and culture
Fullerton is home to several well‑known educational institutions. California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) anchors the city with a large student population and distinctive athletic teams. Fullerton College, one of the older community colleges in the state, also serves local and commuter students. These campuses contribute to arts programming, research activities and a calendar of public events.
