Overview
FCSB is a professional football club based in Bucharest, Romania. Established in June 1947, it grew from a sports club associated with the Romanian armed forces into one of the country's most successful and widely supported teams. The club is commonly associated with the red-and-blue colours and the nickname Roș-albaștrii (the red and blues).
History and identity
The team began life as part of the Army sports association, originally known under military names. For decades it competed as FC Steaua București within the multi-sport CSA Steaua București structure. Following a legal and administrative dispute over the use of the Steaua name and emblems, the professional football entity adopted the name FCSB in 2017. The club has had a number of high-profile owners and presidents; its most visible and controversial owner in recent years has been businessman George "Gigi" Becali.
Achievements
On the domestic stage FCSB is the most decorated Romanian club, having won the national championship 26 times and numerous national cups and supercups. Internationally the club reached its peak in the mid-1980s when it won the European Cup (the competition now called the UEFA Champions League), making it the only Romanian side to lift that trophy. Its European successes remain a defining part of its legacy.
Stadium, supporters and rivalries
Historically linked to the Ghencea ground, the club has also played many high-profile fixtures at the national Arena Națională. FCSB enjoys a large and passionate fan base across Romania and beyond. Its matches against traditional rivals such as Dinamo București are among the most intense fixtures in the national calendar and are often described as Bucharest derbies.
Structure and notable facts
FCSB maintains youth teams and an infrastructure aimed at developing Romanian talent, while also recruiting foreign players. The club's colors, badge, and history are central to heated debates among supporters and sports authorities because of the split between the civilian club and the military sports association.
