Overview
Drechterland is a municipality in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. It is a predominantly rural local government area made up of a number of villages and small towns. Drechterland was created on 1 January 1979 through the merger of the former municipalities of Hoogkarspel, Oosterblokker and Westwoud. Upon its establishment the new administrative entity was briefly named Bangert; that name was replaced in 1980 by the present name Drechterland. The municipality was further enlarged in 2006 when the neighbouring municipality of Venhuizen was incorporated, bringing additional villages and residents into the jurisdiction.
