Overview
Christopher Claus Andersen (born July 7, 1978) is an American former professional basketball player best known by his nickname "Birdman." Born in Long Beach, California, Andersen grew up in Iola, Texas, and spent one season of organized college basketball at Blinn College before pursuing a professional career. He earned his nickname from fellow player Junior Harrington because of distinctive wing tattoos on his inner biceps and an oft-flamboyant appearance on and off the court.
Professional career path
Andersen entered professional basketball without being selected in a major draft and spent time in minor leagues and international circuits before making a sustained impact in the National Basketball Association. During his long career he played for a number of NBA franchises and also had stints in the Chinese Basketball Association. He is widely remembered for his energy, shot-blocking and athleticism around the rim.
Teams and accomplishments
- Denver Nuggets — one of Andersen's early NBA stops where he became a fan favorite for hustle plays.
- New Orleans Hornets — Andersen contributed as a backup big man and rim protector.
- Miami Heat — his time with the Heat culminated in the highlight of his career: winning the NBA championship in 2013.
- Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers — later NBA stops where he provided veteran presence and depth.
- Chinese Basketball Association — Andersen also played professionally overseas during gaps in his NBA tenure.
Playing style and persona
Andersen primarily played at the power forward and center positions. He was valued for defensive intensity: rim protection, shot-blocking, and offensive rebounding, rather than as a primary scorer. His athletic dunks, leaping ability and willingness to contest shots made him a momentum player off the bench. Off the court, Andersen became a pop-culture figure because of his tattoos, distinctive hairstyle choices and expressive personality, which endeared him to many fans.
Suspension, reinstatement and later career
In 2006 Andersen received a two-year ban from the NBA for violating the league's drug policy; the suspension interrupted his NBA trajectory. He was officially reinstated on March 4, 2008 and returned to the league, rebuilding his career until winning the title with Miami in 2013. After his main NBA tenure he continued to play professionally, including periods abroad in China and participation in the 3-on-3 professional circuit known as the Big3.
Legacy and notable facts
Chris Andersen's story is often cited as an example of persistence and reinvention: an undrafted player who carved out a lengthy professional career, overcame a major suspension, and became an NBA champion. His nickname "Birdman," the tattoos that inspired it, and his high-energy playing style are among the enduring images associated with him in basketball culture.
