Overview

Castricum is a coastal municipality (municipality) in the Netherlands, situated in the province of North Holland. The town and its neighbouring villages together had about 35,772 residents in 2019 and currently host roughly 36,000 people. The area blends small urban centres with seaside settlements and a distinctive dune landscape along the North Sea.

Geography and environment

The municipality lies near the North Sea coast and features belts of dunes, beaches and coastal wetlands that are characteristic of the Dutch shoreline. These natural zones support dune grasses and coastal birds and are popular for walking, cycling and sea-bathing. Large parts of the local countryside have been managed for both conservation and recreation, creating paths and visitor facilities while preserving habitats.

History

Castricum developed from small fishing and farming settlements into a more connected parish and municipal centre over several centuries. It is known in wider European history for the Battle of Castricum in 1799, fought during the French Revolutionary Wars when Anglo-Russian and Franco-Dutch forces clashed in the area. Local archives and archaeological finds also attest to earlier human activity along the coast.

Transport and economy

Good rail and road links make Castricum a regional transport node: trains run to larger cities such as Alkmaar and Amsterdam, and roads connect the municipality to surrounding towns. Many residents commute to jobs in the Amsterdam–Haarlem–Alkmaar corridor. The local economy mixes services, small industry and tourism tied to the beaches and natural areas.

Attractions and community life

Castricum attracts visitors for outdoor recreation and a quieter seaside experience. Typical attractions and amenities include:

  • Sandy beaches and seaside promenades popular in summer;
  • Extensive dune and coastal walking and cycling routes;
  • Local markets, community festivals and small cultural venues in town centres;
  • Sites of historical interest linked to regional history, including memorials and interpretive trails.

The municipality includes the town of Castricum and neighbouring villages such as Bakkum and provides municipal services, schools and sports facilities to residents. For official information and visitor guidance see the municipal website.
