Overview
Agdash District, known in Azerbaijani as Ağdaş, is an administrative raion in central Azerbaijan. The district is centred on the city of Agdash, which serves as the administrative capital. The raion combines lowland plains, river corridors and cultivated land and has played a role in regional agriculture and local administration for centuries.
Geography and natural features
Two significant rivers cross the district: the Kura and the Turyan. Their floodplains feed irrigation networks that support crop cultivation. Along the Kura riverbank lie typical riparian or "tugay" forests — a corridor of trees and wetland vegetation that contrasts with surrounding dry plains. To the north the district borders the Turyanchay state preserve, which protects steppe, riverine and semi-arid habitats.
Settlements and administration
The raion includes the city of Agdash as its administrative centre, the settlement of Leki and a network of villages—traditionally reported as around 72 rural communities. Local government oversees land use, basic services and agricultural planning for the mix of urban and rural settlements.
History and cultural notes
Agdash city traces its origins back several centuries, commonly dated to the 16th century in local histories. The district lies within the broader historical region often associated with Shirvan and the central lowlands of Azerbaijan, where trade routes and agricultural traditions developed over long periods.
Economy and land use
The district's economy is principally agricultural, relying on irrigated fields and orchards supported by river water. Typical activities include cereal and cotton-type cropping, horticulture and livestock grazing on surrounding steppe. Small-scale industry and services in the administrative centre support processing, transportation and local markets.
Environment and conservation
The proximity of tugay forest strips and the Turyanchay protected area gives Agdash District ecological significance: these habitats are important for biodiversity, migratory birds and water regulation in a dry region. Conservation efforts focus on preserving riverine woodlands and managing irrigation to reduce habitat loss and soil degradation.
