Aaron Ciechanover is an Israeli biochemist who shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for elucidating the ubiquitin-mediated system cells use to mark and degrade proteins.

Aaron Ciechanover (born October 1, 1947) is an Israeli biologist and biochemist best known for helping to establish how cells selectively degrade proteins. His work revealed the central role of ubiquitin, a small protein that is attached to other proteins to mark them for destruction. Key discovery: the ubiquitin–proteasome pathway

Ciechanover, together with colleagues Avram Hershko and Irwin Rose, described the steps by which ubiquitin is covalently linked to target proteins and how polyubiquitinated proteins are recognized and dismantled by the proteasome. The pathway involves a cascade of enzymes that activate, conjugate and ligate ubiquitin onto substrates, creating a tag that directs proteins to the proteasome for degradation. This mechanism explains how cells remove misfolded proteins, control levels of regulatory factors, and respond to changing physiological signals.

For this work Ciechanover was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004 with Hershko and Rose.
