Overview

Group B was one of six groups in the group stage of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, held in Canada. The group brought together two established European sides and two teams making early appearances on the World Cup stage: Germany, Norway, Thailand and the Ivory Coast.

Teams and characteristics

The four teams represented three different confederations and contrasting levels of experience. Germany entered as one of the tournament favourites with a long history of strong performances in women's football. Norway brought a well-established international pedigree and tactical discipline. Both Thailand and the Ivory Coast were emerging sides, participating on the World Cup stage to gain experience and exposure for their developing programmes.

Format

Each team played the other three once in a single round-robin. Standard FIFA group rules applied: three points for a win, one for a draw and goal difference as a tiebreaker. The top two teams advanced to the knockout rounds; remaining sides were eliminated at the group stage.

Results and significance

At the end of group play, the two European teams progressed to the knockout phase while the two less experienced nations were eliminated. The matches in Group B illustrated the gap that can exist between established programmes and newer entrants, and the group attracted attention for high-scoring games and moments that underscored the differences in resources and development.

Legacy and context

Group B's composition and outcomes were often cited in discussions about investment in women’s football worldwide. For the advancing teams, the group stage results set the stage for deeper runs in the tournament; for Thailand and the Ivory Coast, the experience offered valuable lessons and increased visibility at the highest level.
