Overview

Yi Jianlian (born October 27, 1984, in Heshan, Guangdong) is a Chinese professional basketball player who has been a prominent figure in both the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is commonly listed as a forward/center and is noted for combining size with mobility and a shooting touch that helped him play inside and outside. His family name is Yi; in Chinese naming order the surname appears first. See a general profile at Chinese profile and a biographical note at name entry. The family name convention is discussed further at family name Yi.

Early career in China

Yi began his professional career with the Guangdong Southern Tigers, one of the CBA's most successful franchises. He rose rapidly through youth and provincial ranks to become a central player for Guangdong, helping the team to strong league finishes and establishing himself as one of China’s top domestic talents. During this period he drew national attention for his combination of size, athleticism and perimeter skills, traits less common among big men in China at the time.

Move to the NBA and professional trajectory

Yi entered the international draft market and was selected with a high first-round pick in 2007. He was chosen sixth overall by the Milwaukee Bucks and subsequently played for multiple NBA teams during his time in the United States. His NBA tenure included stints with the Bucks, the New Jersey Nets, and the Washington Wizards, where he gained experience adapting to different roles and to the faster, more physical style of play found in the NBA. For team-specific histories, see the Bucks archive at Milwaukee Bucks, general basketball resources at basketball references, the Wizards record at Washington Wizards, and a later Mavericks engagement at Dallas Mavericks.

Return to China and later career

During the 2011–12 NBA lockout Yi returned to China and rejoined Guangdong. After the lockout ended he returned briefly to the United States and spent time with a Dallas organization, including a short appearance in the NBA Development League before rejoining the Mavericks roster for part of the season. Following that period he resumed his long association with the Guangdong Southern Tigers and continued to be a leading presence in the CBA, contributing veteran leadership, scoring, and interior defense.

Playing style and impact

Yi is often described as a big man with an atypical shooting range and mobility. He has been able to score from mid-range and, at times, from behind the three-point line, while also competing on the glass and defending larger opponents. His combination of attributes made him an attractive prospect for professional teams on both sides of the Pacific and allowed him to serve as a bridge between Chinese basketball and the NBA. He represented China in international competition and was a recognizable sports figure domestically; his prominence earned him mainstream media attention, including a feature on the cover of Time magazine in 2003 (Time cover).
