Overview
Xabier "Xabi" Alonso Olano (born 25 November 1981) is a Spanish football coach and former professional player. Renowned for his passing range, tactical intelligence and composure on the ball, Alonso spent his career as a central or deep-lying midfielder. After retiring from playing he moved into coaching and has worked in youth and senior management roles, first within Real Madrid and Real Sociedad structures and later at senior club level as a manager.
Playing career and achievements
Alonso came through the academy at Real Sociedad, where he made his senior debut before spells abroad with Liverpool and Real Madrid, and a final playing period at Bayern Munich. He was part of club and country sides that won major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League (notably with Liverpool in 2005 and with Real Madrid in 2014) and several domestic league titles in Spain and Germany. On the international stage he was a key member of the Spain national team that won UEFA European Championships and the FIFA World Cup during Spain's successful period around 2008–2012.
Style of play and characteristics
Primarily a deep-lying playmaker, Alonso combined long and short passing, spatial awareness and the ability to control tempo. He frequently played as the link between defence and attack, screening the back line while initiating build-up play. His strengths included accurate long passes, set-piece delivery and calm decision-making under pressure; he was also noted for leadership and reading of the game rather than for physical flamboyance.
Coaching and managerial development
After officially retiring in 2017 Alonso pursued coaching qualifications and began working with youth teams. He joined Real Madrid's youth setup in 2018 and subsequently took charge of youth and reserve sides at Real Sociedad. His transition from retired footballer to coach has been characterised by an emphasis on tactical organisation, possession play and player development. As a manager, he has been praised for adapting modern coaching methods while drawing on his playing experience.
