Warren Mitchell (born Warren Misell; 14 January 1926 – 14 November 2015) was a British actor whose long career spanned television, stage and film. He rose to national prominence for creating the abrasive, outspoken character Alf Garnett in the BBC sitcom Till Death Us Do Part (1965–75). Although widely remembered for that role, Mitchell's work covered a broad range of comic and dramatic parts.

Career and signature role

Mitchell's portrayal of Alf Garnett—an elderly, working-class Londoner with strong, often reactionary opinions—became a cultural touchstone of 1960s and 1970s British comedy. The character was written to lampoon prejudice and social attitudes, and the series provoked both popular affection and controversy for confronting social issues through satire. The format and tone of the show influenced later international sitcoms addressing social themes.

Stage and screen work

Beyond television, Mitchell maintained an active and respected stage career, appearing in productions in London's theatres and on tour. Critics and audiences recognized him for versatility: he moved between broad comic parts and serious dramatic roles, demonstrating a disciplined stagecraft. He also appeared in films and in guest roles on television series, building a reputation as a reliable character actor.

Awards and recognition

Over his career Mitchell received several major honours, including a BAFTA television award and two Olivier Awards for his theatre performances. These accolades acknowledged both his popular appeal and his professional standing within British theatre and television.

Personal life and legacy

Mitchell was married to Connie and they had three children: Rebecca, Daniel (who followed his father into acting) and Anna (also known as Georgia Mitchell). He died on 14 November 2015 after a long illness, aged 89. Remembered for a single iconic role as well as for a wide-ranging body of work, Mitchell left an enduring mark on British popular culture and the stage.
