Tijjani Muhammad‑Bande (born 7 December 1957) is a Nigerian political scientist, academic administrator and career diplomat who served as President of the United Nations General Assembly during its 74th session (2019–2020). His work combines scholarship, public service and multilateral diplomacy and has made him a prominent figure in Nigeria’s international representation.

Career and United Nations roles

Muhammad‑Bande was Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations before being elected to lead the General Assembly. He served as a Vice‑President of the Assembly during its 71st session in 2016 and, on 4 June 2019, was chosen by member states to preside over the 74th session beginning in September 2019. He succeeded María Fernanda Espinosa as President of the Assembly and oversaw the Assembly’s plenary and high‑level meetings throughout his one‑year term. The office of President of the General Assembly is responsible for managing sessions, setting priorities and facilitating debate among all UN Member States (United Nations General Assembly).

Background, honours and public service

Born and raised in Nigeria, Muhammad‑Bande pursued studies in political science and developed a career that bridged higher education, policy research and government administration. Over time he held academic and administrative positions in Nigerian institutions and in public service, which prepared him for senior diplomatic duties. He has been recognized domestically for his contributions; his postnominal includes the national honour OFR (Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic).

Priorities and approach

During his presidency of the General Assembly Muhammad‑Bande emphasized multilateral cooperation, the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the search for consensus on issues such as peace and security, development finance and climate action. As president he facilitated debates, guided the Assembly’s agenda and represented the Assembly in international and inter‑institutional settings, working to strengthen dialogue among diverse regional and political groupings.

Significance and legacy

His election underscored Nigeria’s active role in multilateral diplomacy and illustrated a pathway from academic and policy work into high‑level international representation. Muhammad‑Bande’s tenure is an example of how the presidency of the General Assembly can be used to spotlight global cooperation and national perspectives within a universal forum.
