Overview

Tanya Joan Plibersek (born 2 December 1969) is an Australian politician and member of the Australian Labor Party. She has represented the federal electorate of Sydney in the House of Representatives since first being elected in 1998. Over more than two decades in Parliament she has been a prominent frontbencher in both government and opposition and is currently the Minister for the Environment and Water in the Albanese ministry (since 2022).

Political career and roles

Plibersek served as the Deputy Leader of the Labor Party from 2013 to 2019, a period when Labor sat in opposition federally. That role made her the deputy leader of the parliamentary party and the party's second-ranking public figure for much of that time. She has also held senior responsibilities on the opposition frontbench, serving as a shadow minister across a range of portfolios and contributing to party policy development and public debates.

Key positions held

  • Member of Parliament for the Division of Sydney (since 1998) — see her parliamentary profile: Parliamentary biography.
  • Deputy Leader of the Australian Labor Party (2013–2019).
  • Minister for the Environment and Water (appointed 2022) in the Albanese ministry.

Policy interests and public profile

Throughout her career Plibersek has been associated with social policy, urban and community issues, and environmental matters. As a long-serving representative of an inner-city electorate, she has engaged in debates on public housing, health, education, climate and conservation, and gender equality. Observers often note her role as a senior Labor figure who combines electoral experience with a public-facing media presence.

History and significance

Entering federal parliament in the late 1990s, Plibersek rose through the ranks to become one of Labor’s better-known voices in the national arena. Her tenure as deputy leader coincided with a rebuilding phase for the party, and her ministerial appointment after the 2022 election placed her at the centre of environmental and water policy at a time when those issues were prominent in Australian public life.
