Susana Mendoza (born May 13, 1972) is an American elected official and member of the Democratic Party who has held several public offices in Illinois. She is best known for serving as the Illinois Comptroller, the statewide officer responsible for maintaining the state’s fiscal accounts and reporting on its financial condition. Before holding statewide office she served as Chicago City Clerk and as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing neighborhoods on the city’s southwest side.
Political career and offices held
Mendoza began her legislative career in the Illinois General Assembly after first being elected to the state House in the early 2000s. She represented the 1st District, which covered communities such as Brighton Park, Little Village, Gage Park and Back of the Yards. In 2011 she won election as Chicago City Clerk, a municipal post that manages public records and city document services. Later she ran for and won statewide office as Illinois Comptroller, a role that expanded her responsibilities from municipal and district-level issues to the fiscal management of the entire state.
- Illinois State Representative: represented the 1st District in the Illinois House of Representatives (state legislature profile).
- Chicago City Clerk: elected in 2011 to oversee city records and services (city clerk office).
- Illinois Comptroller: elected to the statewide fiscal office, responsible for accounting and reporting on state finances (Office of the Comptroller).
Roles, responsibilities and priorities
As Comptroller, Mendoza’s statutory duties include maintaining the state accounting system, issuing financial reports, and ensuring bills are paid in accordance with appropriation laws. Her public statements and policy emphasis have often stressed transparency in government accounting, promptness in vendor payments, and improving the clarity of budget documents for lawmakers and citizens. In municipal office she was involved in record access, local constituent services, and efforts to modernize administrative procedures.
2019 mayoral campaign
In late 2018 Mendoza entered the 2019 Chicago mayoral race. A video from her campaign that surfaced in November 2018 showed planning related to a mayoral bid, and she formally launched a campaign shortly after. The mayoral contest drew a crowded field of candidates; Mendoza campaigned on municipal management and fiscal experience but did not advance past the first round of voting.
Public image, distinctions and context
Mendoza’s career is often characterized by steady advancement from neighborhood representation to city administration and then to a statewide fiscal post. Her background in both legislative and executive municipal roles gave her practical experience with constituent services and public record systems before taking on broader fiscal responsibilities. Observers note that officials who move from city to state-level fiscal offices bring perspective on how statewide policy affects local governments and vendors.
