Overview
South Gyeongsang Province, commonly called Gyeongsangnam-do, is a coastal province in southeastern South Korea. Its administrative center and largest city is Changwon. The province occupies a mix of lowland plains, river valleys and a jagged coastline of bays and islands; its approximate geographic coordinates are 36°34′N 128°43′E.
Geography and climate
The province fronts the Korea Strait and includes numerous offshore islands that support fishing and tourism. Terrain inland ranges from fertile plains to forested hills and small mountain ranges. The climate is temperate with warm, humid summers and cool winters, moderated along the coast. Major rivers and estuaries create agricultural areas and natural harbors that have shaped settlement patterns.
History and administration
South Gyeongsang traces its administrative roots to the historic Gyeongsang region, which was divided into north and south provinces during modern reforms. Over time the province developed urban centers and industrial zones. It is subdivided into cities (si) and counties (gun), administered from Changwon.
Economy and infrastructure
The provincial economy blends manufacturing, shipbuilding, maritime industries and agriculture. Changwon is an important hub for machinery and precision manufacturing. Shipyards, particularly on islands and near coastal cities, support large-scale vessel construction and repair. The region also hosts ports, industrial complexes and transportation links to nearby metropolitan areas.
