Shahabuddin Ahmed (1 February 1930 – 19 March 2022) was a Bangladeshi jurist and politician who twice held the office of President of Bangladesh. He is best known for leading a caretaker government during a national transition and later serving a full presidential term in the 1990s. He also held the post of Chief Justice of Bangladesh in the early 1990s.

Judicial career and interim leadership

Ahmed was a senior figure in the judiciary when mass protests forced the resignation of President Hussain Muhammad Ershad in late 1990. As the country's Chief Justice, Ahmed assumed the role of acting president to guide the nation through the handover to a democratically elected government. After supervising that transition and the parliamentary elections that followed, he returned to his duties on the bench.

Presidency (1996–2001)

Several years after his interim service, Ahmed was chosen to serve another term as head of state. From 1996 until 2001 he held the presidency as the nation's 12th president, completing a full constitutional term.

Later life and death

In February 2022 Ahmed was admitted to hospital in Dhaka with health problems related to advanced age. He passed away on 19 March 2022 at the age of 92.
