Moe grew up in a rural setting and worked in agriculture and local business before entering provincial politics. His background in farming and community life shaped his political outlook, giving him a focus on rural economic concerns, resource development and services for smaller communities.
Rise in provincial politics
Moe was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan and established himself as an MLA representing a largely agricultural constituency. In the government that followed the 2016 provincial election he was appointed Minister of Environment, a portfolio that placed him at the centre of debates over provincial resource management and federal environmental policy. In late 2017 he resigned that cabinet post to run in the Saskatchewan Party leadership contest.
Premiership and priorities
After winning his party’s leadership, Moe became premier in February 2018. His government has emphasized economic development based on natural resources and agriculture, fiscal management, and defending provincial jurisdiction in disputes with the federal government. Energy policy, rural health and infrastructure, and position on national climate and carbon pricing measures have been recurrent themes during his tenure.
Electoral record and public profile
Under Moe’s leadership the Saskatchewan Party has maintained a strong presence in the provincial legislature. He is a prominent voice for Saskatchewan’s resource sector and rural communities and is known for asserting provincial interests in intergovernmental forums. His leadership style reflects a pragmatic, regionally focused conservatism.
