Religious role and background

As the spiritual leader of the Ansar movement, al-Mahdi combined clerical authority with political leadership. His family traced its leadership to the Mahdist revival of the 19th century, and the title of Imam of the Ansar carried social and moral influence across parts of Sudan. This religious legitimacy was a key base for his party and for his public standing.

Political career

Al-Mahdi’s political life was marked by attempts to navigate Sudan’s recurrent swings between civilian rule and military regimes. His first term as prime minister in the 1960s occurred during a period of parliamentary government. After decades of upheaval, he returned to the premiership in 1986 following elections that aimed to restore civilian governance, but his government was toppled by a military coup in 1989. Throughout his career he positioned himself as an advocate for pluralism, national reconciliation, and a civilian-led state.

On 26 November 2020 he died after contracting COVID-19. He passed away while hospitalized in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, at the age of 84.
