Wainwright is the son of folk performers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, and the brother of singer Martha Wainwright. Born in New York, he spent formative years in Montreal in a bilingual, music‑centred household. That upbringing exposed him to folk, pop and classical traditions and informed his later interest in blending genres.
