In 1964 Wilson and Penzias were using a sensitive microwave antenna to study radio signals when they encountered an inexplicable, isotropic noise. After exhaustive tests to eliminate potential sources of interference, they concluded the signal was not terrestrial or instrumental. Independent theoretical work had predicted such a residual radiation as a signature of the Big Bang; the experimental detection provided powerful empirical support for that cosmological model.

The measurements were made with the Holmdel horn antenna at Bell Labs, a large microwave horn constructed for satellite communication tests. The instrument’s design minimized side lobes and ground pickup, making it ideal for detecting faint, diffuse radiation. The team’s careful calibration and removal of known noise sources—ranging from urban radio interference to biological contamination of the antenna—were central to establishing the signal’s cosmic origin.

The detected radiation corresponds to a nearly uniform blackbody spectrum with a temperature of about 2.7 kelvin, now known as the cosmic microwave background. Its discovery transformed cosmology from a largely speculative field into a precision science and guided decades of theoretical and observational work on the universe’s origin and evolution.

For the discovery, Wilson and Penzias were awarded the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics.
