Overview
Christopher Nicholas Parsons CBE (10 October 1923 – 28 January 2020) was an English broadcaster and actor whose career in entertainment spanned many decades. He became a household name through his warm, unflappable presenting style and his ability to combine comic timing with steady facilitation on both radio and television. Parsons is particularly remembered as the long‑time presenter of the BBC Radio 4 panel game Just a Minute, a programme he fronted from its inception in 1967 until his death.
Career and notable work
Parsons worked across a range of media: radio panel shows, television quiz programmes, stage productions and occasional film and television acting roles. On television he presented popular quiz formats, including Sale of the Century, and he maintained a steady presence on radio where his role on Just a Minute made him synonymous with the show. His professional persona combined genial affability with the discipline needed to keep lively panel discussions moving.
Characteristics and style
Listeners and viewers often described Parsons as a reassuring and witty host: someone who could rein in chaos without overshadowing contributors. He had an economical, clear delivery and a knack for improvisation when panellists departed from the rules. This combination of restraint and comic timing made him a model of the British light‑entertainment presenter.
Honours and public roles
Beyond broadcasting, Parsons took on civic and institutional roles. He served as Rector of the University of St Andrews from 1988 to 1991, acting as a public advocate for student interests and representing the university in ceremonial functions. He was recognised for his services to broadcasting and entertainment with national honours and widespread public affection.
Later life and legacy
In August 2019 Parsons suffered a fall and was hospitalised in Aylesbury; complications from that accident contributed to his death on 28 January 2020 at the age of 96. His passing prompted tributes emphasising both his longevity and the gentle authority he brought to broadcasting. For many, Parsons exemplified a continuity of British light entertainment across the late 20th century.
