Overview

Nenê (born Maybyner Rodney Hilário on September 13, 1982) is a Brazilian professional basketball player best known for a long career in the National Basketball Association. A versatile frontcourt player who has lined up at both power forward and center, he combined size, low-post fundamentals and solid shooting to be a regular rotation piece for multiple NBA teams. Early life and name

Born and raised in Brazil, Nenê grew up playing locally before entering professional basketball. Early in his career he was known by his given name, Maybyner Rodney Hilário; he legally changed his name to Nenê in 2003, adopting a childhood nickname. The name change is commonly cited in biographical sketches and team media guides.

NBA draft and Denver Nuggets

Nenê was selected in the 2002 NBA Draft with a lottery pick and was immediately involved in a draft-night trade. Initially taken by the New York Knicks, he was sent to the Denver Nuggets as part of a multi-player deal. He developed in Denver into a dependable interior player with the ability to score on short rolls and in the post while also contributing on defense and on the glass. Health, recovery and later trades

In January 2008 Nenê underwent surgery to remove a testicular tumor, a medical episode that was publicly reported and from which he recovered to resume his professional career. More information on health matters and the announcement at the time can be found at medical reports. In March 2012 he was traded from Denver to the Washington Wizards in a multi-team deal that also involved the Los Angeles Clippers. The transaction included several players moving between the involved clubs; for context on the trade partners see Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers.

Playing style and role

Nenê's style combined physical interior play, mid-range shooting ability for a big man, and experience in pick-and-roll sets. He served both as a starter and as an experienced backup over his career, providing size, screens, offensive spacing and veteran leadership. Coaches often used him in matchups that required a stronger post defender or a dependable scorer near the basket. His on-court contributions are summarized in league records and player pages maintained by the National Basketball Association (NBA).
