Mike Porcaro (May 29, 1955 – March 15, 2015) was an American bass guitarist and longtime member of the rock band Toto. He earned a reputation in the Los Angeles music scene for solid timekeeping, melodic lines, and supportive ensemble playing. He worked both as a touring musician and in the studio, contributing to the sound of Toto and to other recording projects during his career.
Career and musical style
Porcaro was primarily known for his role as a bass player, where his approach emphasized groove, clarity and musicality rather than flashy solos. He performed onstage for many years with Toto and appeared on the band's tours and recordings from the 1980s onward. Before and alongside his work with the group he was also active as a session musician in the Los Angeles area, collaborating with fellow artists and producers.

Mike came from a highly musical family. He was the middle son of percussionist Joe Porcaro, and his brothers included drummer Jeff Porcaro and keyboardist Steve Porcaro. Illness, retirement and death
In 2007 Porcaro stopped touring after he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease that affects motor function. He stepped back from live performance as the illness advanced. He died from complications related to ALS in his sleep on March 15, 2015 at his home in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 59.
