Early life and business background

Macri studied civil engineering and worked in the private sector before entering public life. He is the son of Franco Macri, a well-known industrialist, and spent part of his career managing family business interests. Outside politics, he gained national visibility through his role as president of the Boca Juniors football club, a position associated with significant organizational and managerial experience in Argentine sports.

Political rise and roles

Macri founded and led the Republican Proposal party (PRO) and later helped build the broader electoral coalition known as Cambiemos (Let's Change). As Mayor of Buenos Aires he pursued urban and transportation projects, promoted public-private partnerships and sought to modernize municipal administration. For an overview of his mayoral term see his record as mayor.

Presidency (2015–2019)

Macri won the presidency in 2015, campaigning on a platform of economic liberalization, institutional transparency and greater integration with global markets. His government reduced certain subsidies, loosened currency controls and attempted reforms aimed at attracting foreign investment. During his term the administration negotiated a substantial agreement with the International Monetary Fund to address fiscal and balance-of-payments difficulties. For details on his national administration see his presidential tenure.

Policies, challenges and legacy

  • Economic policy: market-oriented reforms intended to restore investor confidence and reduce fiscal deficits.
  • Social and political context: reforms were controversial and coincided with episodes of rising inflation and public discontent.
  • Electoral outcome: Macri was defeated in the 2019 presidential election and left office at the end of his term.

Macri remains a significant figure in contemporary Argentine politics, representing a business-oriented, center-right approach that contrasts with longstanding Peronist traditions. His career spans the private sector, sports administration and national government, and his legacy is frequently debated in terms of economic results and institutional reforms.
