Mateo Kovačić (born 6 May 1994) is a Croatian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder. He came through the youth system in Croatia and established himself in senior club football while also becoming a regular for his country.

Club career

Kovačić made his senior breakthrough with Dinamo Zagreb as a teenager. He debuted for the first team at 16 and was part of squads that won back-to-back league championships before moving abroad. In 2013 he signed for Internazionale, where he continued his development in Serie A.

After the 2014–15 season he transferred to Real Madrid. While with Madrid he was a member of the squad that won the UEFA Champions League in 2016.

International career

He became a full international for the Croatian national team in 2013. Kovačić represented Croatia at major tournaments including the 2014 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2016, and has been a regular selection for the national side since his debut.

Style of play and nickname

Kovačić is noted for his close control, passing range and ability to move the ball through midfield. His calm, composed approach on the ball led teammates and observers to give him the nickname Il Professore (The Professor).
