Political career and leadership

McGowan became leader of the Western Australian Labor Party in 2012 and led it into state elections. After defeating the incumbent government in 2017, he became Premier on 17 March 2017. He retained strong public support in the following term and led Labor to a decisive victory in the 2021 election, widely described as a landslide that gave his government an unusually large parliamentary majority.
