Overview
Madan Lal Khurana (15 October 1936 – 27 October 2018) was an Indian political leader associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s as a principal figure in Delhi politics and later held posts at the national level. Khurana's career combined organisational work with elective office, and he is remembered as one of the senior BJP leaders who helped establish the party's presence in the national capital.
Background and early involvement
Khurana began his public life through longtime links with the RSS and later joined the BJP as that organisation expanded its political reach. His background was in party organisation and public advocacy, which prepared him for leadership roles at municipal and state levels. Like many leaders of his generation, he moved between organisational duties and government responsibilities as the BJP transitioned from a movement to a governing party.
Political career and offices
His most prominent office was as Chief Minister of the National Capital Territory of Delhi from 1993 to 1996, an interval in which the state reunited administrative responsibilities with newly elected local institutions. Later he served in the federal government as a Union minister with portfolios that included Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism in the cabinet led by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In 2004 he was appointed Governor of Rajasthan, a post he vacated within a short period.

- Appointed Governor of Rajasthan (2004)
Contributions and reputation
Khurana was known for his organisational skills within his party and his role in consolidating the BJP's electoral foothold in Delhi during the 1990s. Supporters credited him with strengthening party structures and focusing attention on urban governance matters; critics and party colleagues sometimes pointed to internal differences that led to shifts in leadership. He remained a significant figure in national conversations on party organisation and public affairs through several decades.
