Bobby Brown (19 March 1923 – 15 January 2020) was a Scottish football goalkeeper who later became a manager. He is remembered for a playing career that included spells with Queen's Park, Rangers and Falkirk, for earning international recognition with five appearances for Scotland, and for managing at both club and national level. He was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his long service to the game.
As a player Brown occupied the goalkeeping position, a role that demands shot-stopping, concentration and organization of the defence. He developed his reputation in the post-war era when competitive football resumed at the highest levels. While specific match records vary by source, Brown is widely cited as a reliable presence between the posts for his clubs and as a credible option for the national team during his active years.
Playing and international career
Brown began with the well-known amateur side Queen's Park before moving into the senior professional game. His time with Rangers brought him into the spotlight of Scottish domestic football, and he later played for Falkirk. At international level he represented Scotland on five occasions, an achievement that placed him among a smaller group of players who combined club success with national selection in that period.
Goalkeepers of Brown’s generation typically faced heavy pitches and robust physical styles of play; adaptability and resilience were prized qualities. Brown’s selection for Scotland indicates contemporary recognition of those attributes even when major tournament formats and international calendars differed from the modern game.
Managerial career and legacy
After retiring as a player Brown moved into coaching and management. He managed St Johnstone at club level and was appointed manager of the Scottish national team, a post he held from 1967 to 1971. In that role he was responsible for preparing squads for both competitive fixtures and friendlies and for representing Scottish football at the national level.
