Major drainage basins

Rivers are commonly grouped by where they discharge. The Magdalena–Cauca system dominates the interior and drains north to the Caribbean. Western watersheds empty directly to the Pacific. Southeastern and eastern rivers belong to the Amazon or Orinoco basins and form large transboundary river systems shared with neighbouring countries.

Uses, ecology and human impact

Rivers in Colombia support navigation, irrigation, fisheries, hydroelectric power and freshwater supplies for cities and agriculture. The Magdalena and lower Cauca valleys host important urban and industrial centres, while Amazonian and Orinoco tributaries traverse biodiverse rainforest with many endemic species. Major environmental pressures include deforestation, mining, pollution and the effects of dams and altered flow regimes on fish migrations and floodplain habitats.

Notable facts and distinctions

Some Colombian rivers are internationally known under different names downstream in neighbouring countries (for example Caquetá/Japurá and Putumayo/Içá). The country's varied topography produces rapid transitions from Andean highland streams to lowland meandering rivers, creating a wide range of aquatic environments. Many river basins play key roles in indigenous cultures and livelihoods.
