Characteristics of the streams

On Antigua the short drainage lines are often locally called "guts." They are typically steep-sided, cut into limestone or volcanic soils, and carry runoff during storms. Because flows are intermittent, they do not form continuous river systems with year-round flow, and vegetation along them tends toward scrub, woodland, and thickets adapted to periodic dryness.

Water resources and human use

Limited surface water has shaped how residents obtain freshwater. Rainwater harvesting, groundwater wells where feasible, and desalination are important components of water supply. Ephemeral channels can deliver pulses of freshwater to coastal wetlands and recharge zones but also cause flash flooding and erosion during intense rainfall events.

While Antigua's guts contribute to local drainage and habitat connectivity, Barbuda's island terrain supports extensive tidal flats, lagoons and mangrove stands rather than stream-fed valleys.
