Readability tests are mathematical formulas and heuristics intended to estimate how easy or difficult a piece of writing will be for a reader. - Flesch Reading Ease — produces a 0–100 score where higher values indicate easier text; based on average sentence length and average syllables per word.
- Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level — converts similar factors into a U.S. grade-level estimate often used in schools and technical documentation.
- Gunning Fog Index — estimates years of formal education needed to understand text, emphasizing long words.
- SMOG — a simple method focused on polysyllabic word counts to predict grade level, popular in health literacy work.
- Coleman–Liau Index and Automated Readability Index (ARI) — rely on characters and sentence counts rather than syllables, making them easier to compute automatically.
- Dale–Chall and Fry Graph — incorporate word lists or graphical plots to better reflect familiar versus unfamiliar vocabulary.

Interest in readability grew in the early to mid‑20th century as educators, publishers and government agencies sought reproducible ways to match readers to texts. Over time researchers refined formulas to balance linguistic accuracy and practical computability; some indexes were adapted for automated systems and simple programming.
Uses, strengths and limitations
Readability scores are useful for curriculum design, plain‑language initiatives, editorial guidelines and search engine optimization. Strengths include speed, comparability and objectivity for surface features. Limitations are important: formulas mostly measure sentence length and word difficulty, not cohesion, tone, logical structure, or reader background knowledge. They also vary by language and can mislead if used alone.
Practical guidance
Practitioners commonly use multiple indices together, complement scores with user testing or expert review, and tailor targets to audience needs. For technical or medical texts, simpler words and shorter sentences generally improve real comprehension even when scores disagree.
