Knut Conrad Borge (2 September 1949 – 9 April 2017) was a Norwegian journalist, radio and television presenter whose work bridged music criticism and popular broadcasting. Born in Bærum, he became a familiar voice to listeners and viewers across Norway through long-running radio programmes, television appearances and music journalism. Over several decades Borge combined an encyclopedic interest in jazz with a conversational presentation style that made specialized music accessible to a wider audience.
Broadcasting career
Borge began working with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) in the early 1970s as a freelancer and soon established himself as a regular host. His most notable radio programmes included Borgulfsen (1984–1997) and Swing & Sweet (1986–1999), which focused on jazz, swing and popular standards. In addition to radio, he appeared on television and was chosen on multiple occasions to present the Norwegian music awards show Spellemannprisen, a high-profile event in Norway’s popular music calendar.
Journalism and writing
Alongside broadcasting, Borge wrote about music and culture. He worked as a jazz columnist and journalist for Verdens Gang (VG) from 1979 to 1989 and later contributed to Dagens Næringsliv between 1990 and 1995. His books include the 1986 collection Det største siden Svartedauen and the 1994 volume Kjære Skrythals, co-authored with Tore Skoglund. These publications reflect his interest in musical history, commentary and the personalities who populated Norway’s entertainment scene.
Program formats and style
Borge’s programmes often mixed recorded music with informed commentary, interviews and playful quizzes. From 2004 he hosted the classical music quiz 20 spørsmål, a format that tested both specialist and general knowledge in an accessible setting. His tone is commonly described as urbane and slightly ironic, with a clear affection for the repertoire he presented. The shows he led served both to preserve historical recordings and to introduce listeners to lesser-known artists.
Legacy and later life
Throughout his career Borge was a visible figure in Norway’s music broadcasting community, praised for his deep knowledge of jazz and popular music as well as his capacity to communicate that knowledge to everyday audiences. He died in Oslo on 9 April 2017 at the age of 67. Reports indicated the immediate cause as heart failure. Colleagues and listeners remembered him for his distinctive presenting voice and long-standing contribution to Norwegian musical life.
