Kenny Lynch was an English singer-songwriter, entertainer and actor whose career spanned popular music, television variety, stage and film. Born Kenneth Lynch on 18 March 1938, he became one of the most visible black British entertainers of his generation, noted for his warm stage presence, comic timing and crossover appeal in the 1960s and beyond. He was appointed an OBE in recognition of his services to entertainment.

Musical career

Lynch recorded pop and rock material and toured extensively on the British variety circuit. He reached a wide audience with the hit single "You Can Never Stop Me Loving You", which remains his best-known recording. On stage and television he combined singing with light comedy and audience interaction, a style that suited the variety formats popular at the time. He also wrote songs and worked alongside other performers in the industry.

Acting and screen work

In addition to his musical output, Lynch appeared in films and television programmes. Notable screen appearances include roles in Carry On Loving and The Playbirds, and he was a familiar face on 1960s and 1970s variety and entertainment shows. His acting roles often used his comic strengths and stage experience, allowing him to cross between musical and dramatic work.

Recognition and legacy

As a performer active during a period when few black entertainers achieved mainstream visibility in Britain, Lynch is remembered for breaking barriers and maintaining a long public career. He received the OBE for his contribution to entertainment and is cited in histories of British popular culture as an important figure on the postwar variety circuit. His blend of music, comedy and television presenting influenced later generations of performers.
