Katarzyna Janina Łaniewska-Błaszczak (20 June 1933 – 7 December 2020) was a Polish actress whose career spanned theater, film and television, and who became a visible public figure through cultural leadership and political engagement. Born in Łódź, Poland, she combined a long acting career with involvement in civic life during the communist period and in Poland’s post‑1989 political landscape.

Career and notable roles

Łaniewska worked across multiple performance media and was widely recognized for both dramatic and comedic roles. On television she became known to broad audiences for her work in popular series of the 1970s. Her television credits included the long-running comedy Czterdziestolatek, which brought her national visibility between 1970 and 1974. Alongside screen work, she remained active on the stage and in touring productions throughout her life.

Positions, affiliations and public service

Beyond acting, Łaniewska held leadership roles in professional organizations and took part in governance of artist communities. She served as president of the Warsaw branch of the Association of Polish Artists from 1992 until 2006 and participated on national commissions concerned with actors’ affairs. Her administrative work focused on supporting colleagues, preserving theatrical traditions and advocating for artists’ interests.

Activism and political involvement

During the era of the Polish People's Republic she was identified with opposition circles and cultural dissent; after 1989 she continued public engagement as a political activist. In the 2011 parliamentary elections she stood as a nonpartisan candidate for the Senate with endorsement from the Law and Justice party and ran in Warsaw, receiving significant popular support with nearly 100,000 votes (about 31% in that contest). Her political profile combined advocacy for cultural matters with outspoken conservative views in later years.

Personal life and legacy

Łaniewska’s personal life intersected with the Polish theatrical world: she was married from 1954 to 1964 to fellow actor Ignacy Gogolewski. She remained a recognizable public personality through interviews, public appearances and her continued involvement in artist associations. Katarzyna Łaniewska died on 7 December 2020 in Łódź at the age of 87. Her long career and civic engagement left a mark on Poland’s cultural life, remembered for both her performances and her role as an advocate for actors and the performing arts.
