Jon Pertwee

Career and public image

Pertwee first trained and worked as a performer in the mid‑20th century, establishing himself in comic and dramatic parts on radio and stage before moving regularly into television and film. He was noted for a polished, slightly theatrical manner and for playing resourceful, authoritative characters with a warm comic edge. The Third Doctor

As the Third Doctor he developed an incarnation that was action‑oriented, urbane and often dapper, wearing distinctive capes, frilled shirts and colorful ties. During this period the character was frequently involved with UNIT, a military/scientific organisation, and was portrayed as an Earth‑based ally of human defenders. The Third Doctor used physical techniques described on‑screen as "Venusian Aikido," drove a classic vehicle nicknamed "Bessie," and worked alongside companions such as Liz Shaw, Jo Grant and Sarah Jane Smith, as well as the recurring figure of Brigadier Lethbridge‑Stewart.

Worzel Gummidge and later work

Following his time on science fiction television, Pertwee reinvented himself for children’s programming as the eccentric scarecrow Worzel Gummidge. That role emphasized character comedy and slapstick while showcasing his skill with voice and physical performance. He continued to appear in variety formats, guest spots and interviews, maintaining a presence in public life until the later years of his career.

Pertwee came from a family active in the arts. His son, actor Sean Pertwee, followed him into acting, and Jon was a cousin of fellow actor Bill Pertwee, known for his role in the classic British sitcom Dad's Army.
