Jonas Eduardo Américo, commonly known as Edu, (born 6 August 1949 in Jaú, São Paulo) is a retired Brazilian footballer who built a long career as an attacking midfielder and forward. He emerged as a professional in the mid-1960s and became notable both for his domestic accomplishments in Brazil and for his role with the Brazil national team. Edu combined technical skill and attacking movement, and over two decades he played for several prominent clubs in Brazil and abroad.
Club career
Edu began his professional journey as a teenager and went on to represent a number of clubs between 1966 and 1985. His domestic career included long spells with Santos and Corinthians, and he also had stints at Internacional, São Cristóvão and Nacional Fast Clube. Later in his career he played abroad in Mexico with Tigres UANL. Throughout these years he won multiple state championships and earned individual recognition for his performances.

International career
Edu represented the Brazil national team in a decade that spanned from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. He was capped 42 times and scored eight goals for his country between June 1966 and June 1976. He was selected for three World Cup squads: first as a very young member of the 1966 delegation, and later for the 1970 and 1974 tournaments.
At the 1966 tournament he was named in the squad while still only 16 years old, a distinction that made him one of the youngest players ever included in a World Cup roster; he did not appear in matches at that event. He was part of Brazil's celebrated 1970 squad that won the World Cup, and made one appearance in that tournament. He was also selected for the 1974 World Cup and played once in that competition as well. For reference, see the national team overview: Brazil national team.
His involvement across three World Cups — being called up in 1966 (1966), included in the title-winning 1970 group (1970 World Champion) and again in 1974 (1974) — underlines a long period of international relevance even if he was not always a regular starter.
Style, honours and legacy
Edu was typically deployed in advanced midfield or forward roles, where his technique, passing and close control helped create scoring opportunities. He won five Campeonato Paulista titles (1967, 1968, 1969, 1973 and 1977) during his club career and received the Brazilian Silver Ball award in 1971 in recognition of his domestic performances. Those honours reflect both team success in strong regional competitions and personal distinction.

Later life and remembrance
After retiring from professional leagues, Edu remained connected to the sport through exhibition and masters matches, appearing in touring all-star teams and friendly fixtures that celebrate past generations of players. His role in a World Cup-winning era and his rare early call-up to a World Cup squad contribute to a lasting recognition among fans of Brazilian football from the 1960s and 1970s.
