Overview

Blonay is a French-speaking settlement in the Riviera-Pays-d'Enhaut district of the canton of Vaud, in Switzerland. For most of its recent history it functioned as an independent municipality, serving as a local centre above the lakeshore towns of Vevey and Montreux.

Geography and character

Perched on the slopes above Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), Blonay offers panoramic views over the lake and surrounding Alps. The area combines wooded slopes, scattered hamlets and cultivated land. Its location on the Swiss Riviera gives it a mild microclimate and easy access to lakeside amenities while retaining a semi-rural character.

History and landmarks

Blonay has roots reaching back to the medieval period and features a historic family seat, the Château de Blonay, which reflects several building phases and local architectural tradition. The village is also associated with the Blonay–Chamby museum railway, a volunteer-run heritage line that preserves historic rolling stock and operates steam and vintage trains on special occasions.

Culture, economy and recreation

Local life blends residential communities with small-scale agriculture, viticulture on nearby slopes and tourism. Visitors come for hiking, scenic viewpoints and cultural events; the proximity of the Lavaux vineyard terraces and the towns on the lake adds options for wine tourism and urban services. Community associations and heritage groups help maintain local traditions.

Transport and accessibility

Blonay is connected by regional roads and public transport links to Vevey and Montreux, with regular bus services and nearby rail connections. The heritage railway provides seasonal excursion services that are popular with rail enthusiasts and tourists.

Administrative change

On 1 January 2022 the former municipality of Blonay merged with Saint-Légier-La Chiésaz to form the new municipality of Blonay-Saint-Légier. This administrative change united the adjacent communities while retaining Blonay's local landmarks and cultural identity.
