Joan Enric Vives i Sicília (born 24 July 1949 in Barcelona) is a Spanish Catholic prelate who serves as Bishop of Urgell and, by virtue of that office, as one of the two Co‑Princes of the Principality of Andorra. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1974 and was granted the title of archbishop on 19 March 2010.

Overview of roles

As Bishop of Urgell, Vives combines ordinary episcopal responsibilities — pastoral care, liturgical leadership and diocesan governance — with a secular constitutional function in Andorra. The Bishop of Urgell has been a joint head of state of Andorra since the late medieval pareage agreements, sharing sovereignty with the French head of state.

Ecclesiastical career

Vives's clerical career began with his priestly ordination in 1974. Over subsequent decades he carried out parish, educational and administrative ministries within the Church before assuming the leadership of the Diocese of Urgell. The personal title of archbishop granted in 2010 is an honorific reflecting his senior standing within the Catholic hierarchy.

Constitutional and public functions

Under Andorra's modern constitution, the Co‑Princes are constitutional heads of state with defined powers and duties. In practice this role is largely ceremonial and representative, though it includes certain formal acts such as promulgating laws, accrediting diplomatic representatives and safeguarding the principality’s independence under the terms of its constitution.
