Jean-Marie Doré — Guinean Opposition Leader and Transitional Prime Minister

Political career and roles

Doré was the founding leader of the Union for the Progress of Guinea (UPG), a party that placed him among the better-known opposition voices in Guinea. He spent much of his public life advocating dialogue, constitutional reform and peaceful transitions of power. In January 2010 he was appointed Prime Minister of a transitional government charged with preparing and conducting presidential elections following a period of military rule and political instability.

Doré remained an important elder statesman for many in Guinea, respected for his persistence in opposition politics and for accepting a difficult role during a fragile transition. He died in Conakry on 29 January 2016 at the age of 77. His life is often cited in discussions about the challenges of democratization and reconciliation in Guinea.
