Jacques Joseph Charles Villeneuve (born April 9, 1971) is a Canadian racing driver known for rapid progress through international motorsport and a direct public persona. He was born in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and is the son of Formula One driver Gilles Villeneuve. He is also the namesake of an uncle who competed in motorsport.
Early life and junior career
Raised in a motorsport family, Villeneuve learned racecraft in junior categories in Canada and Europe. He developed a reputation for speed and determination that helped him progress into professional open-wheel racing. His early success attracted attention from teams on both sides of the Atlantic.
North American success
Villeneuve established himself in North American open-wheel racing before moving to Formula One. In 1995 he won the CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) title and the Indianapolis 500, a rare double that demonstrated his ability in high-profile events and opened opportunities in Formula One.
Formula One career (1996–2006)
Villeneuve entered Formula One with Williams and in only his second full season, 1997, he secured the World Drivers' Championship. That early achievement marked him as one of the few drivers to win the title soon after arriving in F1. Over a decade in the sport he drove for teams including Williams, BAR, Renault and later Sauber/BMW Sauber, scoring race victories, pole positions and points finishes while coping with the competitive and political challenges common to top-level motorsport.
Driving style and public image
On track Villeneuve was noted for decisive overtaking and a willingness to push the limits of car and tyre. Off track he became known for candid interviews and outspoken views on racing matters, which earned him both praise and criticism. He is often discussed among second-generation drivers because of his connection to his father, whose legacy remains significant in motorsport history.
Later career and activities
After leaving full-time Formula One competition Villeneuve competed in a variety of categories, including sports cars, touring cars and stock car events, and made occasional guest appearances in newer disciplines. He has worked in broadcasting and served in ambassadorial roles for events and manufacturers, helping promote motorsport to broader audiences.
