Ian Rush (born 20 October 1961) is a former Welsh international footballer and one of the most prolific strikers of his generation. Best known for his long association with Liverpool, he also had a spell in Italy with Juventus and began his playing career at Chester City. He represented Wales at senior international level and later moved into coaching, management and broadcasting.
Career overview
Rush emerged from Chester City's youth system and signed for Liverpool in the late 1970s. Over more than a decade at Anfield he became the club's leading goalscorer, forging a reputation for consistent finishing, intelligent movement and an ability to score in important matches. He spent a season in Italy before returning to England and had further shorter spells with other clubs before retiring from the professional game.
Playing style and records
As a centre-forward Rush combined quick anticipation with clinical finishing inside the penalty area. He was noted for timing his runs to meet crosses, his composure from close range and his capacity to convert half-chances. For Liverpool he scored 346 goals in 660 appearances across all competitions, a tally that has made him synonymous with the club's attacking success in the 1980s and early 1990s. For Wales he won more than 70 caps and contributed regularly to the national side's scoring.
