Hubert Hammerer (10 September 1925 – 24 March 2017) was an Austrian sports shooter best known for winning the Olympic gold medal in the 300 metre rifle, three positions event at the 1960 Summer Olympics. Representing Austria in international shooting, Hammerer competed across two Olympic Games and became one of his nation's most prominent marksmen during the post‑war period.

Career and Olympic participation

Hammerer took part in the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games, entering five rifle events in total. His most notable achievement came in Rome in 1960, where he secured the gold medal in the 300 m rifle three positions competition. At the 1964 Tokyo Games he had the honour of carrying the Austrian flag at the opening ceremony, a role often reserved for a country’s most accomplished or respected athletes.

Event: 300 m rifle, three positions

The 300 m rifle, three positions event tests a shooter’s precision and adaptability. Competitors fire from three distinct positions—prone, standing and kneeling—using a fullbore rifle at a long-range target. Success requires steady technique, careful sighting, physical endurance and the ability to manage breathing and trigger control across differing body positions.

Technique, equipment and competition format

Rifle shooting at international level combines fine motor control with mental focus. Shooters use specialized match rifles and supportive gear such as slings and jackets to stabilise position. Scoring is determined by the placement of shots on concentric scoring rings, and matches are decided by aggregate points across the prescribed series of shots in each position.

Legacy and later life

Hammerer’s Olympic victory placed him among Austria’s most successful shooting athletes of his era and contributed to the country’s sporting history in precision shooting disciplines. He remained a respected figure in the sport after his competitive career. Hubert Hammerer died in Vienna on 24 March 2017 at the age of 91.
