Harald V (born 21 February 1937) is the reigning King of Norway. The eldest son of King Olav V and a grandson of King Haakon VII, Harald succeeded his father in 1991. He was born at Skaugum, a traditional royal estate in the Oslo region, and later became the country’s head of state under Norway’s constitutional monarchy.
Early life and background
Harald grew up in the royal family during a period of significant social and political change in Norway. His upbringing combined formal education, military training and public service customary for heirs to the throne. During his youth and early adulthood he took part in national institutions and received training that prepared him for the symbolic and representative role of monarch.
Accession and constitutional role
When Harald became king in 1991, a ceremonial blessing was held in the traditional cathedral in keeping with Norwegian practice. As monarch he is the formal head of state. The Norwegian king's powers are defined by the constitution and exercised on the advice of elected ministers; in practice Harald's role is largely ceremonial and symbolic. Typical duties include opening parliament, receiving foreign envoys, signing legislation into law and accompanying the government on formal occasions.
Family and personal life
In 1968 Harald married Sonja Haraldsen after a long courtship that attracted public attention because she was a commoner. The couple have two children: Princess Märtha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon, the heir apparent. The royal household combines private family life with public responsibilities and supports a range of cultural and charitable activities.
Interests, public image and significance
King Harald is known for a down-to-earth public image and personal interests that include outdoor sports and sailing; he has taken part in numerous maritime events and public sporting occasions. Over his reign he has been associated with gradual modernization of the monarchy and efforts to keep the institution relevant to contemporary Norwegian society.
