Overview
Angus "Gus" Ian MacPherson (born 11 October 1968 in Glasgow) is a Scottish former professional footballer and manager. Primarily associated with St Mirren during both his playing and coaching careers, MacPherson made the transition from defender to manager and became a prominent figure in Scottish club football during the 2000s. He was educated at Lenzie Academy.
Playing career
MacPherson played as a professional defender. Over his playing years he was involved with several Scottish clubs and developed a reputation as a reliable, workmanlike player. His playing background provided a foundation for coaching, giving him firsthand experience of the Scottish league structure and the demands of both top-flight and lower-division competition.
Managerial career
After retiring as a player, MacPherson moved into coaching and became manager of St Mirren, a club he helped steer through a challenging period. He led the team back to the Scottish Premier League in the mid-2000s and remained in charge until St Mirren parted company with him on 11 May 2010. He later went on to manage other Scottish sides, including a spell with Queen of the South. His managerial work has included both first-team leadership and youth development responsibilities.
Style and reputation
MacPherson is often described as pragmatic and organised, favouring disciplined defensive structures and an emphasis on physical fitness. He has been credited with developing younger players and stabilising clubs operating on limited budgets, a common challenge in Scottish football.
