Francisco José Pereira Pinto Balsemão (born 1 September 1937 in Lisbon) is a Portuguese businessman, former journalist and retired politician. He is best known for a career that bridged journalism, private media ownership and center-right politics. Nationally prominent from the 1970s onward, he combined editorial initiatives with public service and later concentrated on building a media group.
Early career and journalism
Balsemão began his public life in journalism and publishing. He was associated with important Portuguese news outlets and helped establish influential media titles during a period of political change in Portugal. His background in the press gave him name recognition and a network that later supported both his political rise and his return to the private sector. For many years he remained a visible figure in editorial and executive roles, representing a segment of Portuguese media ownership and management.
Political life and prime ministership
Entering politics with the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Balsemão rose to party leadership and became Prime Minister in 1981. He led a coalition government during a difficult phase marked by economic challenges and fractious coalition politics. His administration sought to maintain stability after the sudden death of a predecessor and to navigate Portugal through fiscal and social pressures. He served in the post until 1983, when parliamentary shifts and electoral change brought a new government to power.
Media entrepreneurship and later roles
After leaving frontline politics Balsemão returned to the private sector, where he is widely associated with the foundation and expansion of a Portuguese media group. He oversaw newspapers, magazines and broadcast investments that helped shape the country’s modern media landscape. As a media executive he emphasized professional journalism and commercial development, becoming an influential voice in debates over media regulation, plurality and the economics of news.
