Dame Eileen June Atkins DBE (born 16 June 1934) is an English actress and occasional screenwriter whose professional career has extended from the early 1950s to the present. She has worked consistently in theatre, film and television and is recognised for her versatility in classical and contemporary roles, for precise character work on screen, and for contributions as an adaptor and writer for drama.
Early career and theatre
Atkins began her professional life in repertory theatre before becoming a frequent presence in the West End and on tour. Over many decades she has taken leading parts and supporting roles in a wide range of plays, including modern drama and classical repertory. Her stage work has been central to her reputation: critics and colleagues have noted her clarity of text, attention to detail and ability to sustain complex roles throughout long runs.
Film and television
On screen Atkins has combined regular television work with selective film appearances. She has appeared in single-play television dramas, serials and anthology pieces that showcase acting for the camera. Her film roles have ranged from supporting character parts to those in ensemble casts; among the films in which she appears is Gosford Park (2001). Across both media she is known for bringing theatrical discipline to filmed acting.
Writing, adaptation and other work
Alongside acting, Atkins has worked as a writer and adapter. She has created stage adaptations and written scripts for television, bringing an actor's understanding of dramatic structure to her adaptations. On several occasions she has adapted material she later performed, and her dual experience as actor and writer has informed both crafts.

- She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1990 and promoted to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2001.
