Dean Heller (born May 10, 1960) is an American politician who represented Nevada at both the state and federal levels. A member of the Republican Party, Heller served in the U.S. House of Representatives and later in the U.S. Senate. His career includes long service in Nevada state government, election to Congress, a full term in the Senate, and subsequent involvement in statewide politics.
Early life and education
Heller was born in Castro Valley, California, and grew up in the American West. He attended the University of Southern California, where he completed his undergraduate education. After college he settled in Nevada and worked in private business before entering public service. His background in both business and state government shaped his political profile as someone emphasizing economic development and constituent services.
Nevada state service
Before serving in Congress, Heller held elected and appointed positions in Nevada state government. He served as Nevada's Secretary of State, a statewide office that brought him name recognition and experience with election administration and business filings. That tenure helped position him for a run for the U.S. House of Representatives in the mid-2000s.
U.S. House of Representatives
In 2006 Heller was elected to the U.S. House to represent Nevada's 2nd Congressional District. He served from 2007 until 2011 in the House, where he focused on issues important to his largely rural and suburban district, including economic development, public lands management, and matters affecting Nevada's tourism and mining sectors. His House service provided the platform for his elevation to the U.S. Senate.
U.S. Senate tenure
Heller was appointed to the U.S. Senate in May 2011 to fill a vacancy and later won election to a full term. During his time in the Senate (2011–2019) he addressed legislation affecting Nevada's economy, natural resources, and regulatory environment. Observers noted that he sought to balance statewide concerns with national Republican priorities and that he emphasized constituent outreach for Nevada's diverse regions.

2018 election and later political activity
In the 2018 midterm election Heller ran for reelection but was defeated by Democratic challenger Jacky Rosen. The result ended his Senate term on January 3, 2019. After leaving Congress he remained active in public affairs in Nevada and in September 2021 announced a campaign for the Republican nomination for governor in the 2022 election cycle. He contested the Republican primary though he did not become the party’s nominee.
Political positions and reputation
Throughout his career, Heller was often described as a politician attentive to Nevada’s specific economic mix—tourism, gaming, mining, agriculture, and public lands—while aligning with many mainstream Republican positions on fiscal and regulatory matters. He emphasized constituent services, local economic development, and policies intended to support rural parts of the state.
